Certain hidden levels are only available at hard difficulty, which provide ample opportunities for unique powerups and upgrades. Hard difficulty and above employ enemies with more health as well as fire more bullets per second. There are three levels of difficulty to choose from: Easy, Medium, and Hard, as well as the hidden options of Impossible, Suicide, and Lord of the Game. The arcade mode has characteristics from coin-op arcade shooters, such as in-game powerups and extra lives.

Tyrian's full game mode features a credit and equipment-buying system, and the shield/armor hit points which are similar to game mechanics in Raptor: Call of the Shadows, another PC game from the same period. Before the player's starship is destroyed it must take enough damage to exhaust several points of shields (which regenerate over time) and armor. The game presents a variety of enemies (some flying, some fixed, some on rails) and bosses, with many occurrences of fixed and/or indestructible obstacles. The player controls a space ship fitted with different weapons (front and back, linked to the same button, and up to two external pods with their own buttons) and other equipment. It was developed chiefly as a homage to the works of Compile, particularly their Zanac series. Tyrian is an arcade-style vertical scrolling shooter. Now on MicroSol's hit list, Trent manages to secure a small, armed spacecraft and set out the free world of Savara. MicroSol has discovered Gravitium (the game's brand of Unobtainium) on Tyrian and seeks to keep it a secret. Before dying Buce warns Trent that the drone belonged to the militaristic MicroSol megacorporation. While on the planet Tyrian, a hostile drone shoots his best friend, Buce Quesillac. The player takes on the role of Trent Hawkins, a skilled spaceship pilot. Recently, Tyrian 2000 was released - but it just doesn't have that same charm that the original game did. This section needs expansion. And even that won't protect you from the bosses in the registered version

This was added in later revisions.Īs you progress through the game's levels, eventually you'll find out that by pressing spacebar, your ship would literally wipe everything out onscreen because of the sheer firepower that you've accumulated. Depending on the type of ship you were currently piloting, you could replenish your armor, send a wide swath of destruction forward, or do another cool trick.
#Tyrian vs tyrian 2000 generator
Both your ship's shield and generator continually recharged, but you are often under heavy attack most of the game.Ī unique feature of this game is the ability to do 'twiddles', or 'Street-fighter-like moves'. If you installed a poor generator, it would adversely affect your ability to fire and to replenish your shields - once your shields were whittled down, your defense consisted of your ship's armor. The ship was extremely customisable the lifeblood of your ship, however, is the generator. Sidekicks flew on either side of your ships and assisted in adding to your total firepower.
#Tyrian vs tyrian 2000 upgrade
Between each level, you were given the opportunity to upgrade your ship, weapons, and add special weapons called 'sidekicks'. Your score was used as currency, operating on the idea that a higher score would be netted by destroying more ships. Much of the story comes in the form of 'datacubes' collected by destroying enemy ships. Microsoft MicroSol has stepped in to control mining of this rare mineral, and Trent just happens to be caught in the middle of it you escape from MicroSol's prison camps and thus begins your quest to bring down this evil corporation. The story is that, in the year 2xxxx, an anti-gravity mineral has been discovered on the planet Tyrian. Tyrian was actually one of the first games to have a semi-decent story as well as bits of humour thrown in.
